Why card-only systems leak Kenyan bookings
A client says yes at 9pm. If paying means finding a card with an online limit — or worse, waiting for your bank details, doing a transfer and sending proof tomorrow — the confirmation stalls. Card-only checkouts are one of the quiet reasons Kenyan operators still close trips over WhatsApp and reconcile transfers by hand.
The infrastructure has caught up with behaviour. Even Maasai Mara’s Mara Triangle gate is cashless — M-Pesa or card only[1]. Your booking system should accept the same.
How the flow works in TravelBookingWidgets
- The client opens your proposal (or a published package) and picks the option they want.
- You send a payment request — or they click pay on the proposal: M-Pesa STK push to their phone, Pesapal card checkout, or bank details for manual recording.
- They enter their M-Pesa PIN — done in under a minute, no app, no card details.
- The payment matches to the booking automatically; the deposit receipt generates and the balance tracks itself.
- Everything lands on the trip file, the calendar (deposit-due event) and the client’s CRM record.
What to check in ANY M-Pesa booking system
- Is M-Pesa a first-class option in the payment flow — or a "we’ll send paybill details" afterthought?
- Does the payment auto-match to the booking and generate the receipt, or does someone reconcile manually?
- Can you take partial deposits and track balances per booking?
- Do international clients have a card path on the same checkout (Pesapal or similar)?
- Does it connect to the quote and proposal — or is payment a separate tool nobody links back?
The balance, not just the deposit
Deposits are step one of the money: proforma invoice, deposit receipt, final invoice, final receipt — the full document chain is part of the same flow, with merge-tagged cover emails. We wrote the whole workflow in our payment-request guide.
Do clients need a smartphone for M-Pesa checkout?
No — the STK push works on any phone that runs M-Pesa. The client receives the prompt, enters their PIN, and the payment confirms.
What does M-Pesa collection cost?
Our pricing is published flat (see pricing); M-Pesa transactions carry Safaricom/Pesapal’s standard processing terms. The honest comparison is against the staff-hours-and-transfer-chasing it replaces — and against marketplace commission on the bookings you’d otherwise route through a third party.
